Sexism & Scrunchies
Yesterday Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Peruvian Prime Minister Salomon Lerner. Instead of focusing on diplomatic issues between Peru and the United States, the Huffington Post created a poll to gage how readers are “feeling (about) the Hillary scrunchie.”
This is not the first time the Huffington Post has focused on Clinton’s hairstyle. In July, the website created an almost identical poll when Clinton wore a scrunchie to Spain.
Other blogs have picked up on the Huffington Post’s scrunchie coverage. Joanna Douglas of Yahoo’s Shine writes:
“Personally, we see no big deal here and think the Secretary of State has far more pressing issues than her choice of hair accessory. This is no velvet floral scrunchie from the '90s, this is tame. And to be honest, we've been known to rock a scrunchie around the house from time to time—hey, they don't leave a hair dent!”
However, the coverage doesn’t stop at a few sexist articles about an irrelevant hair accessory. Yesterday the Huffington Post also published a retrospective examining Clinton’s style evolution. Shame on the Huffington Post for this blatant sexism.
