Shame On Allen West

Congressman Allen West (FL-22) brought sexism to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this week by embarking on a sexist e-mail tirade lambasting Congresswoman and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20). After throwing in a few choice adjectives like “vile” and “characterless,” West concluded the e-mail – which he forwarded to House leadership – by criticizing the Congresswoman for not being a “lady.”

This would be shocking rhetoric from an elected official if it weren’t for West’s proven track record of demeaning and degrading women. Let’s be clear – Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz was elected by the people of the 20th Congressional district of Florida – by a significant margin – to represent them in the United States House of Representatives. She has every right to voice her concerns on the House floor. If Congressman West is having trouble “respecting” the Congresswoman as a “lady,” then perhaps he should try respecting her as a peer and colleague, as she so rightfully deserves.
