Calling a Candidate Darling is Sexist: Take Five

Sometimes fighting against sexism in the media can feel like hitting your head against a brick wall. Name It. Change It. has been patient in explaining to the media that certain words are sexist, especially when applied to women running for office. Words like “darling.”

While it should be self-evident we’ll spell it out again: calling a candidate “darling” is a sexist putdown.

This week the Washington Examiner referred to Elizabeth Warren as a “liberal darling” on their campaign blog. We are running out of ways to say that calling a woman politician “darling” is sexist, gendered and unnecessary. We have made this sentiment crystal clear in our four (count em!) previous blog posts on the subject - three that defend Elizabeth Warren. Despite the fact that we are truly tired of sounding like a broken record, we will not condone gendered descriptions of women political candidates.

Boston Herald:  “Liz Warren is darling of Tinseltown crowd.”

Examiner“Hollywood’s newest darling – Elizabeth Warren.”

Lowell Sun on Elizabeth Warren: “the darling of the liberal establishment.”

Boston Globe“Democratic Darling has also been critic.”

New York Post on Kirsten Gillibrand: “the darling of the far left…”
